The GHS-FUA R2019A dataset contains extensive information on Functional Urban Areas (FUAs) worldwide. An FUA includes both urban cores (centers) and surrounding suburban areas that are closely connected to the core city based on factors like population density, area, and surrounding regions. The data consists of polygons, which include demographic data, area delineations, and associated time periods.

The goal of the GHS-FUA R2019A dataset is to provide a consistent and globally comparable framework for analyzing urban areas. The data is updated every five years.

The GHS-FUA R2019A dataset is managed and published by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission. The Province of South Holland offers this data through its collaboration with METREX, a network of European metropolitan regions and areas, of which South Holland is a member.

The dataset can be applied to topics related to urban planning, policy development, and research on urban development.
