Description

Overstromingen kwamen vroeger regelmatig voor. Daarom bouwden de eerste bewoners vanaf de IJzertijd tot in de Middeleeuwen (2500 tot 500 jaar geleden) hun boerderijen vaak op een woonheuvel of huisterp. Kenmerkend voor de middeleeuwse terpenaanleg zijn de reeksen woonheuvels langs veenriviertjes of pas aangelegde ontginningsassen. De woonheuvels zijn veelal herkenbaar aan een lichte verhoging in het landschap. Soms is de verhoging afgegraven of weggezakt en is de woonheuvel alleen nog herkenbaar aan de verkaveling.
